How HSAs Work
You are eligible to open a health savings account at Heartland Bank if you meet all of the following criteria:
- You are covered by a high deductible health plan
- You do not have coverage through another health plan
- You are not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return
- You are not entitled to Medicare benefits
Once you have an HSA open, you can make tax-free contributions to your account. HSA contribution limits are as follows for 2024:
- Individual: $4,150
- Family: $8,300
Those 55 and older and not enrolled in Medicare can make a $1,000 in “catch-up” contributions as well for both individual and family plans.
Heartland Bank health savings accounts come with a debit card which is a convenient tool. A $1 minimum deposit is required to open the account. Interest is earned on available balances and is compounded and paid monthly. Our HSAs also come with one free order of Heartland Bank HSA checks.
Contributions for health savings accounts for 2024 are as follows:
- Individual- $4,150; age 55 and over- $5,150
- Family- $8,300; age 55 and over- $9,300
